Academy Award-nominated filmmaker David Peterson directs the documentary Let the Church Say Amen. The World Missions for Christ Church exists inside a small storefront in Washington, D.C. While the city government lacks funds and power, this little church reaches out to make necessary, positive changes in the community. Homelessness, violence, and drug addiction are all faced head-on by the church members, as missionaries seek out those who have been left behind by poverty and injustice. Peterson presents faith as a force of hope and inspiration within a crumbling, neglected city. Let the Church Say Amen premiered the 2003 SilverDocs Documentary Film Festival and screened at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival as part of the American Spectrum competition. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

This edition of Biography, the long running documentary series from A&E, explores the life of King David. The second king of Israel, and the first of the dynasty that governed Judah and Israel until the exile, David was the youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem. According to Jewish tradition he is the author of several of the Psalms, and according to some Christian traditions he is the ancestor of Jesus. He was a warrior under King Saul, but his successes against the Philistines (including the killing of Goliath) caused the king's jealousy, and he was forced to become an outlaw. After Saul's death, he became king over Judah in Hebron, and later was chosen king of all Israel. He made Jerusalem the political and religious centre of his kingdom, building a palace for himself on its highest hill, Zion, and placing the Ark of the Covenant there under a tent. He united the many tribes of Israel, and extended his territory from Egypt to the Euphrates. The later part of his reign was troubled by the revolts of his sons Absalom and Adonijah. He was succeeded by Solomon, his son by Bathsheba. ~ John Patrick Sheehan, All Movie Guide

Filmmaker Amy Berg recounts a harrowing story of child abuse and how a serial child molester went free for the better part of two decades in this documentary. Oliver O'Grady was a Catholic priest who served in a number of parishes in Southern California during the 1970s and '80s. O'Grady was also a habitual child molester who abused dozens of youngsters who were entrusted to his care, and while his superiors in the church were aware of O'Grady's crimes as early as 1973, they opted to simply move him from one congregation to another rather than turn him in to authorities or strip him of his ordination. In Deliver Us From Evil, a number of O'Grady's victims and their families discuss his crimes and the repercussions they feel to this day. O'Grady himself also appears in the film, speaking candidly about his career as a sexual predator and recounting his misdeeds in detail. (After finally being convicted of child sexual abuse, O'Grady served time in prison and now lives in Ireland, where he is still looked after by Catholic clergy.) Berg also offers a look into the history of the Catholic Church and how its leadership has often protected those within the hierarchy at the expense of their worshipers. Deliver Us From Evil was named Best Documentary Feature at the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

For this Swiss-German documentary, filmmaker/Sinologist Ulrike Koch sneaked cameras into Tibet in order to film four men and 160 yak in a 2,000-year-old ritual -- the annual spring pilgrimage to gather raw salt at remote lakes, a three-month Himalayan trek. Camping along the way, they engage in prayers, talk, and songs. Following nomadic traditions, the saltmen make the return trip with salt in backpacks made from yak pelts. In addition to Tibetan chanting, the film's music includes a post-production blend of Hamburg musicians and native Tibetans. The 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway shook Japanese society, resulting in bitter recriminations and national soul-searching comparable to Watergate in America. The group responsible -- Aum Shinrikyo -- was little known to the average Japanese. Believing in a mixture of varying strands of Buddhism along with elements of New Age spiritualism and with rumors of drug-use and bizarre rituals, the group and its members were widely vilified by Japan's voracious media. Six months after the gas attack when Aum's original leaders -- guru Shoko Asahara along with Ikuo Hayashi, Fumihiro Joyu, and others -- were carted off to jail, documentary filmmaker Tatsuya Mori approached Aum to shoot an objective fly-on-the-wall-style documentary about this much discussed and maligned sect. Focusing on the Aum's most visible member, not jailed Hiroshi Araki, Mori shows how frighteningly ordinary these members are. This film was screened at the 1999 Yamagata Documentary Film Festival. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide

Acclaimed actor Robin Williams narrates this heartfelt look at a Belgian priest whose selfless determination to ease the suffering of others came at the height of Hawaii's horrific leprosy epidemic. The year was 1872 and leprosy was sweeping through the Hawaiian islands. In a desperate bid to isolate the disease and prevent it from spreading any further than it already had, the government quickly established a bleak and remote leprosy settlement on the island of Molokai. Abandoned by their fellow man and forced to live on an island that had no medical care, scarce food, and minimal shelter, the quarantined population of Molokai seemed doomed to die an unimaginable death. Despite the perceived loss of hope in that dark hour, relief would soon come when in 1883 a youthful Belgian priest requested to be transferred to the island in order to care for the ailing leprosy victims. In the years that followed Father Damien would serve as an angel of mercy to hundreds of suffering people whose slow and grueling deaths would have otherwise been as lonely as they were painful. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Named after a Sufi word that translates roughly as "breath of life" or "blessing," Baraka is Ron Fricke's impressive follow-up to Godfrey Reggio's non-verbal documentary film Koyaanisqatsi. Fricke was cinematographer and collaborator on Reggio's film, and for Baraka he struck out on his own to polish and expand the photographic techniques used on Koyaanisqatsi. The result is a tour-de-force in 70mm: a cinematic "guided meditation" (Fricke's own description) shot in 24 countries on six continents over a 14-month period that unites religious ritual, the phenomena of nature, and man's own destructive powers into a web of moving images. Fricke's camera ranges, in meditative slow motion or bewildering time-lapse, over the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, the Ryoan-Ji temple in Kyoto, Lake Natron in Tanzania, burning oil fields in Kuwait, the smoldering precipice of an active volcano, a busy subway terminal, tribal celebrations of the Masai in Kenya, chanting monks in the Dip Tse Chok Ling monastery...and on and on, through locales across the globe. To execute the film's time-lapse sequences, Fricke had a special camera built that combined time-lapse photography with perfectly controlled movements of the camera. In one evening sequence a desert sky turns black, and the stars roll by, as the camera moves slowly forward under the trees. The feeling is like that of viewing the universe through a powerful telescope: that we are indeed on a tiny orb hurtling through a star-filled void. The film is complemented by the hybrid world-music of Michael Stearns. ~ Anthony Reed, All Movie Guide

A&E's award-winning series Biography profiles the lives of the "world's first two people," Adam and Eve, biblical characters described in the Book of Genesis as the first man and woman created by God. Adam was formed from the dust of the ground and God's breath or spirit; Eve was made from Adam's rib. Biblical traditions describe their life in the garden of Eden, their disobedience and banishment, and the birth of their sons Cain, Abel, and Seth. Their fall into sin is portrayed as a temptation by the serpent (the Devil) to disobey God's command not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Many further traditions emerged in later Jewish and Christian writings. Features the combination of interviews with biblical scholars, location footage, paintings and artifacts to take an in-depth look at Adam and Eve. ~ John Patrick Sheehan, All Movie Guide

What does Confucius say? A&E can answer that. This edition of the award winning series Biography profiles the Chinese philosopher. Born in the state of Lu (modern Shantung), by the time Confucius was fifteen he had resolved to devote himself to learning. His father died when he was just three and young Confucius was a shepherd, cow heard, bookkeeper and clerk at various times to help support his mother.

Largely self-educated, he married Chi-Kuan at nineteen and became a local administrator. In 531 BC began his career as a teacher. In 501 BC he was appointed Governor of Chung-tu, then minister of works, and later minister of justice. His ideas for social reform made him the idol of the people; but his political enemies caused him to leave Lu, and he traveled widely, followed by his many disciples.

He later edited the ancient writings, and the Confucian Analects, memorabilia compiled soon after his death, are a collection of his sayings and doings. His moral teaching stressed the importance of the traditional relations of filial piety and brotherly respect and have been an important part of Chinese culture for over 2000 years. ~ John Patrick Sheehan, All Movie Guide

This edition of Biography, the long running documentary series from A&E, explores the life of Moses. He remains a major character of Israelite history, portrayed in the Book of Exodus as the leader of the deliverance of Hebrew slaves from Egypt and the recipient of the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. In Exodus, stories about his early life depict his escape from death as an infant by being hidden in the bulrushes, his upbringing in the Egyptian court, his flight to Midian, and the divine call to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt. The video also describes how Moses predicted a series of miraculous plagues designed to persuade the Pharaoh to release the Hebrews, as well as the Passover narrative and the miraculous escape led by Moses through the "sea of reeds". The historical importance of Moses is also explored describing Moses' leadership of the Israelites during their 40 years of wilderness wandering and his death before the Hebrews entered Canaan, the Promised Land. He was traditionally considered the author of the five books of the Law, the Pentateuch of the Hebrew Bible, but this is doubted by modern scholars. This, too, is examined in the documentary as differing views are looked at in hopes of shedding light on exactly what Moses had or had not written.
